Roberta Flack was born in North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, where she heard Sam Cooke singing in a nearby Baptist Church. She took up piano at the age of nine and got a full music scholarship from Howard University in Washington DC - it was here that she was 'discovered' singing in a jazz club by the established soul pianist Les McCann.

6. Feel Like Makin' Love (1974)
Feel Like Makin’ Love was one of the greatest musical successes of 1974, as well as of Roberta Flack's recording career. It went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it Flack's third top spot single. It went on to receive three Grammy nominations for Flack: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.
5. Where Is The Love (with Donny Hathaway) (1972)
Where Is The Love was released in 1972 from the album, Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Flack and Hathaway were good friends, after they both attended Howard University in Washington DC together.
4. The Closer I Get To You (1977)
Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway had taken a five year break from recording together but reunited for this track. Hathaway was suffering from severe depression at the time, and had to get permission from the hospital to record this session. The Closer I Get to You spent two weeks as number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart in April 1978, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
3. Killing Me Softly (1973)
Another Grammy winner for Flack, making her the first artist to win the Record of the Year award for two consecutive years. It's thought the inspiration for the song came from Don McLean, of ‘American Pie’ fame.
2. First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (1972)
This was Roberta's big 'breakout hit', she'd released two solo albums without much success but this song was picked up and used in the Clint Eastwood film 'Play Misty For Me'. It went on to win two Grammys, beating Don McLean's American Pie in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories.
1. Tonight I Celebrate My Love (with Peabo Bryson) (1983)
This duet with Peabo Bryson helped to relaunch the pair's careers and brought them both a return to prominence. It was written by legendary lyricist, and ex-husband of Carole King, Gerry Goffin. It peaked at number two in the UK.

Capping off a string of early-'70s hits with this album's title track, Roberta Flack would soon take a sabbatical from the spotlight in 1975. And while she would return to the stage and studio, Flack never quite hit the heights of this and the handful of other MOR soul releases from the first half of the decade. Her Carole King-meets-Gladys Knight sound is particularly impressive on highlights like 'Mr. Magic' and 'Feelin' That Glow.' Helping out with the stellar backing are such luminaries as vocalist Patti Austin, drummer Alphonze Mouzon, keyboardist Bob James, and guitarist Hugh McCracken. Maybe not as fine an album as 1971's Quiet Fire, Feel Like Making Love will still please the singer's dedicated fans.
